About Towns in Motion

Towns in Motion is a community-driven platform that brings local history to life by turning towns into walkable, interactive stories. We catalog historic sites, landmarks, and the stories behind them from public records and licensed marker data, then map those stories so residents and visitors can explore them on foot. Historical societies, museums, and local historians are welcome to contribute.

Our mission is to preserve and share the rich heritage of communities across Connecticut and the broader United States. Every historic site in our directory is tied to a real location you can visit, complete with descriptions, photographs, audio and video media, and curated walking tours. As the nation celebrates its 250th anniversary, we are working with towns to make their history accessible, engaging, and ready to explore.

Towns in Motion is built by a small team passionate about civic technology and historic preservation. Marker data is licensed from HMdb.org, and additional records are contributed by community members who know these places best. Whether you are a lifelong resident, a curious tourist, or an educator, we invite you to discover the stories that shaped your community.

Towns in Motion is an independent project that celebrates Connecticut's role in America's 250th anniversary. It is not an official CT250 program.
